CHOKEBERRY EXTRACT

Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliott) has been used for centuries for the treatment of colds by Native Americans. It originates from the eastern part of North America. Chokeberries have a very high content of polyphenols, namely phenolic acids (proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins, flavonols and flavanones). In a study where 143 different food items were analyzed for polyphenols, the highest contents of these compounds were found in chokeberries.

The high content and composition of the phenolic constituents of Aronia melanocarpa are responsible for the wide range of the fruit’s potential medicinal and therapeutic effects.

In a pre/post comparison clinical trial in healthy women, 150 mg of BGG chokeberry extract (containing 35% anthocyanins) over 4 weeks significantly improved blood flow, thus reducing the symptoms associated with colds of soreness in the hands, feet, hips or back as well as shoulder stiffness. Furthermore, a reduction in urine 8OHdG levels in subjects with higher oxidative stress levels before the trial was found.
